The lure of the big wall beckons to most climbers: a sweeping sheer sea of granite, vertical camping sandwiched by climbing, or moving over thousands of feet of stone as fast as possible all in one “day”. Such objectives are much more logistically complex and merit gaining the necessary skills, followed by experience, prior to an attempt. In this course we break down big wall climbing to make such objectives less daunting and less intimidating so that participants can begin to view them as realistic goals. This course will cover:

  • Basic clean aid climbing
  • Hauling
  • Rope ascension techniques
  • Simul-climbing
  • Pendulums and lowering outs
  • Short fixing
  • Equipment options and uses
  • Fixed ropes, tag lines
  • Rappelling with a haul bag

Participants should have previous multi-pitch climbing experience on traditional rock climbs.

What our clients say about us

“We had a great time climbing Gallatin Tower in the Gallatin River Valley. Our group ranged in age from 8 to 43. Our guides, Genevieve and Kyle, were able to find routes to accommodate all of us. They really did a fantastic job.”

“Had the best time climbing with Montana Alpine Guides. Sam is a fantastic guide that I would recommend to anyone visiting Montana and the surrounding areas.”
