This course is for climbers/skiers who are interested in learning how to travel safely as a rope team in glaciated terrain and perform a basic crevasse rescue. The course will cover basic glacier travel, the individual components of a successful crevasse rescue system, and putting these components together into a successful crevasse rescue system. The majority of the course will be spent working on the technical components of crevasse rescue.


Skills Covered:

  • Overview of glacier travel
  • Roping up as a team of 2 or 3 
  • Identifying and avoiding hazards on a glacier
  • Self Arrests
  • Snow Anchors
  • Applicable Knots
  • Friction Hitches
  • Mechanical Advantages (3:1 and 5:1/6:1 hauling systems)
  • Completing a crevasse rescue

Prerequisites:

  • Experience with ice axes and crampons
  • Basic knowledge of knots and rope systems
