MAG’s 3-day ski mountaineering course will expose you to the skills and techniques needed to safely and efficiently manage challenging ski terrain such as steep couloirs with technical entrances, exposed faces, and mountain tops (i.e. The Grand Teton).
Skills Covered:
- Steep skiing techniques
- Steep snow climbing
- Rappelling
- Anchor building
- Belay techniques
- Gear selection
Prerequisites:
This is a challenging course and participants will benefit from having a solid background in backcountry skiing including:
- Ability to tour ~4000’ per day
- Ability to smoothly ski 40° terrain in challenging snow (double black diamond terrain)
- 20+ days of backcountry skiing experience
- Level 1 Avalanche Education or higher (See MAG’s course dates)
Location:
Lead MAG Ski Guide and Avalanche Educator Ryan Griffiths will be leading this course. Ryan has a plethora of ski mountaineering experience around Cooke City, the Tetons, and all over Montana and Wyoming. Ryan has also led multiple ski mountaineering expeditions to the Alaska Range with descents on Denali, Foraker, and more. Ryan holds professional training from the AMGA and is a pro member of the American Avalanche Association.
- 3rd known ski descent of The Archangel Ridge on Mount Foraker
- First known full traverse of the Madison Range in SW Montana, 6 days, 100+ miles, 13 summits
- 26 hour, 50 mile traverse from Kahiltna Base Camp (Denali NP) to Wonder Lake
- Rare descent of the North Couloir on Popes Peak, Alberta, Canadian Rockies
- Wapta Traverse in a day
- Mount Columbia
- Denali Ski Descents: Messner Couloir, Rescue Gulley, Orient Express

- Meet and greet: course introduction, goals, gear check/gear selection discussion
